The City of Nosara is nestled in a fertile river valley, near the mouth of
the Nosara River. Here the river is in the lowlands, with wide meanders and
dense forest coverage. The rolling hills which flank the valley's sides are
the last of the foothills of the inland mountain range, and lead to the Pacific
Coast beaches of Nosara; Playa Guiones, Playa Pelada, and Playa Nosara.

The Nosara River is an important part of the history,
economy and growth of the region. It is one of the few rivers of Guanacaste
Province which flows year-round. It is fed by hundreds of natural springs
born in the surrounding mountains. Although the meandering course of the
river has changed considerably over the years, there is evidence that the
region was settled by the indigenous Chorotega people as far back as 3,000
years ago.
